Like so many Netflix titles, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness was released onto the streaming platform with little fanfare. But the series which tells the story of an Oklahoman big cat owner has become a surprise sensation. Filmmakers Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin started out intent on making a documentary about the love for exotic pets in the United States. But they ended up unraveling a much darker tale which involved a murder plot. This seven episode series makes for highly compelling viewing and could be up there with the likes of other addictive Netflix hits like Making a Murderer.
The main focus of Tiger King is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, otherwise known as Joe Exotic. The flamboyant and eccentric Oklahoma-based animal fanatic used to own the Garold Wayne Zoo and at one point was said to be the most prolific breeder of big cats in the country. It also looks into other large animal owners including the founder of Big Cat Rescue, Carole Baskin. It turns out that Exotic and Baskin had been in a fierce feud that spanned many years. This ultimately led to a plot in which Exotic was said to have attempted to hire someone to kill Baskin.
Aside from the intrigue and mystery throughout the series, Tiger King is likely to gain attention thanks to the sheer amount of big cats on screen. People seem to have an infatuation with tigers, lions, and other huge felines, which is why they have long been present in popular culture. Games like Majestic Cats and Pride and Prey at Casino Market recommended 888casino, for example, are slots that feature the wild animals. Tokyo Jungle for PS3 was a console offering which saw the streets of the Japanese capital overrun with fierce cats. In addition to games, there have been countless films with wild cats including the Jungle Book, The Lion King, and many more.
This isn’t the first time Exotic has appeared on TV. Indeed, the outrageous zoo owner has his own web series and also featured in a Louis Theroux special entitled America’s Most Dangerous Pets in 2011. In addition, the tiger breeder attempted to run for president in 2016. This was shown in the Netflix documentary and was one of the highlights of the series.
Tiger King has been met with strong approval from critics, with the general consensus being that this is one show not to be missed. It has a rating of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Guardian said it was “like pouring tequila on your brain.” Other critics talked about how it had to be seen to be believed, and that there were constant twists and surprises at every turn.
For people who like true crime, wild animals, mystery, or Netflix-style documentaries, Tiger King will appeal. It has been such a hit that it could easily be considered essential viewing, as everyone is going to be talking about it. This is one of the most bizarre shows out there, and it will leave viewers flabbergasted about its outrageousness.
